How To Play Forward in Soccer

You don’t have to be tall, fast and strong to be a great forward.  Yes, those things help of course, but they don’t guarantee success as a forward.  The best forwards are the smartest, not necessarily the biggest.

A good forward mantra could be, “I score goals and make selfless plays to help my teammates."

Tip #1
Run East and West, Not Just North and South.

Tip #2
Defend from the Top!  Players and coaches hate when forwards don’t defend up top.  You need to be on World Class attacking status to not defend as a forward these days.

Tip #3
Hold the ball up to bring your teammates into the game.

Tip #4
Be confident!  You will miss more shots then you make.  But you need to have the mindset that every time you shoot you believe 100% you will score.  DO NOT be surprised when you score, expect to score.

Tip #5
Score great goals and score simple goals.  The stat sheet doesn’t record what type of goal it is, just that you scored.

Tip #6
Make runs to free up space for others.  Even if you know you won’t get the ball, sometimes you need to make a run to open space for your teammate.

Tip #7
Do what the game shows you!  This means you need to be smart and know what to do with the ball before you get it.

Robbie Keane of the LA Galaxy is a perfect example.  He makes it looks easy by doing what the game shows him.

Tip #8
You only need 1-2 steps of space to make a play.  Once you beat your defender get a quick shot off.

Exercise Player Can Do:

An exercise we can do to practice.  We are going to work on holding the ball up and bringing your teammates into the game.  You will need a partner, a few balls and 4 cones.

What Player Could Be Doing Wrong:

Some things that could be going wrong.  If you keep turning into defenders then you don’t know what is going on around you!

If you are scared to shoot because you don’t want to miss that is the WRONG attitude.

Bonus Tip:

Celebrate goals when your team is leading!  Get your teammates involved, do a little dance or something. The game is fun, so have fun when you score!
