How to do a Step Over in Soccer

Learn how to do a step over in soccer in this Online Soccer Academy soccer training video.
The Step Over is a great attacking move in soccer to escape a defender.

Key Points:

1. Turn your body angled in the direction you are faking to go
2. Bring dominant leg around front of the ball
3. Touch in opposite direction, away from defender, with outside of foot
4. Change Pace

Equipment needed: 3 cones and Ball

Exercise Player Can Do:

Start just practicing the step over standing. Once your are comfortable set up a start cone, a cone which will serve as the defender 10 yards ahead, then a cone about 7 yards ahead at an angle going forward. Dribble slowly to start cone, do the step over, change pace to end cone. Jog back. Rest, Repeat until you are tired.

What Player Could Be Doing Wrong:

If you are messing this move up a lot you are probably going to fast. The step over usually isn't done at full speed so slow down, do the move and then go fast!

If the defender is winning the ball from you to often or you are hitting the cone in this exercise make sure you do the move early, don't get to close to the defender because that will increase the chance of them winning the ball from you.
