Fake Cruyff - Freeze Defenders in Place

In the real Cruyff you are doing a move and completely changing directions to escape a defender.

With a fake Cruyff, you are acting like you are changing directions but you fake and continue moving forward. This is a great move for creating a 2-3 steps of space between you and a defender to get a shot, pass or cross off.

Key Points:

Key Point #1
Dribble with the foot you want to use to do the fake Cruyff. If you are right footed, dribble with your right foot keeping the ball on the right side of your body.

Key Point #2
Fake like you are going to kick the ball. Get your arms involved, swing your leg, really sell that you are about kick it.

Key Point #3
Stop the ball with the inside of your foot on the front side of the ball. Your toes should be pointed down at an angle and your ankle should be locked.

Key Point #4
Pause! You want to make sure you pause in the Cruyff position for a second. This gets the defender to stop in their tracks because they think you are about to do the Cruyff and change direction.

If you don't pause and you do the fake Cruyff to fast the defender won't even realize what you are doing and they will just keep running with you. Make sure you pause, let them stop, then do the fake cruyff and go.

Key Point #5
Bring the outside of your foot to the inside of the ball by bringing your foot over the top of the ball, then push the ball forward 2-3 steps with the outside of your foot.

Key Point #6
Change Pace and make a quick decision! Go fast and explode out of this move. Now that you have created 2-3 steps of space for yourself quickly get off your cross, shot or pass. Don't wait for that defender to catch up to you. All you need is 1-2 seconds to make a play.

Equipment Needed: You will need a ball and 5 cones.

Exercise Player Can Do:

Now, an exercise we can do to practice. Before we get the cones out practice the Fake Cruyff from a stand still so you can take your time and get use to it.

Once comfortable set up a start cone, place three cones close together about 10 yards ahead of the start cone, this will be your imaginary defender and an end cone about 10 yards away from the middle cones. Dribble up to the middle cones but be on the side of them, do your fake cruyff, then accelerate to the top cone. Turn around and repeat this exercise going the other direction.

Make sure to have a slower run up as you are learning. Then as you get better you can increase how fast you are dribbling before doing the fake cruyff.

Do 10 reps, resting a few seconds between each rep and then rest and repeat the exercise until you feel confident.

What Player Could Be Doing Wrong:

Some things that could be going wrong. If the ball is going behind you when you take your Cruyff touch then you are kicking the ball and not stopping it with your touch.

If this is the case do your run up slower until you get the move right before going to fast. Remember to stop the ball with the inside of your foot, not kick it backwards.

Bonus Tip!

Remember to make a quick decision after the fake cruyff! This move should give you 2-3 steps of space from the defender so you can quickly get off your cross, shot or pass. Don't wait for that defender to catch up to you. All you need is 1-2 seconds to make a play.
