How to do a Soccer Volley
The Side Volley is mainly used as a shooting technique when shooting from a cross. Or shooting a rebound that is perfectly bouncing out to you at the top of the 18 and you are just standing there like someone waiting to cash in a winning lottery ticket!
Key Points:
1. Stand facing your side, your shoulder should be facing your target
2. Step towards the goal, plant foot pointing at target, body still facing sideways
3. Make sure your legs open up when you step, your thigh needs to be cocked back for power
4. Lock your ankle, toe straight down and strike the middle to upper middle part of the ball. This keeps the ball going straight or downward. Strike underneath the ball and it will go up.
5. Follow through and finish with your shoulders and body facing the target
Equipment Needed: As many soccer balls as you have, partner, goal or a fence or wall.
Exercise Player Can Do:
Start off just practicing the volley in soccer technique without the ball. Once comfortable toss the ball in the air, let it bounce and then hit your side volley as the ball is falling from the first bounce. Don't hit it when it's rising. Repeat until comfortable.
If you have a partner have them stand a few feet away and toss you a two handed underhand toss, then you side volley it in. Repeat until comfortable.
Advanced exercises you can do once you have mastered the side volley technique is to practice side volleys from a cross or have your partner toss you the ball, you chest trap it and hit a side volley before it hits the ground, they call that a full side volley!
What Player Could Be Doing Wrong:
If you are not kicking from the side volley position and you are hitting it from a straight position it's because you are turning your body to early and facing the goal as you kick it. You want to face the side as you swing and then on your follow through you should finish facing the goal.
If you are not getting enough power its because you are not getting your thigh back far enough so when you take that step to open up make sure you open up and step towards the goal, not towards the ball. Remember power comes from your thigh, not your calf. So your knee down shouldn't be generating the power. Knee down should stay connected; it's your thigh that gets the power.
