Soccer Fitness Tempo Runs
Today we are doing Soccer Fitness Training. Being fit in soccer is important, but not more important then technical and ball control training. As a younger player fitness comes naturally from practicing and playing. As you get older in your teenage years fitness training should be done in addition or as part of your soccer training.
In this soccer fitness training video we are going to do a tempo run. Soccer is a sport of changing speeds. At times you are sprinting, jogging and even walking. The tempo run will help you get your heart rate up and down quickly.
Exercise Player Can Do:
First make sure you are good and warmed up. You will need a stop watch. This run is 15 seconds fast, 15 seconds slow. 30 seconds fast, 30 seconds slow. 45 seconds fast, 45 seconds slow. Then work your way back down. 45 seconds fast, 45 seconds slow. 30 seconds fast, 30 seconds slow. 15 seconds fast, 15 seconds slow.
That is one set. Do 1-3 sets depending on your level of fitness. Make sure to rest a few minutes between each set.
By fast I mean 85-90% running and by light I mean 10%, almost a walk you are jogging so slow.
What Player Could Be Doing Wrong:
If a coach can look at you and not see the difference between your slow jog and sprint then you are going to fast on the slow jog. Go real slow on the light jog, take a few deep breaths to catch your breath so then you are fresh to go fast on the sprint.
Bonus Tips:
Soccer is a game of changing speed. It's not played at a constant pace, which is why I love tempo runs. The faster you can recover from a hard run by lowering your heart rate the better game shape you will be in!
Wear an ipod while training! It's hard and lonely to train on your own. Put some tunes on or listen to some soccer podcasts while busting your tail off so you can make it more enjoyable!
