#16 Soccer Training Session

This session will have focus on shooting!

Equipment Needed: 5 cones, a goal and as many soccer balls as you have! If you don't have a goal then use a wall or fence.

0-5 minutes:

Warm up, Jog and stretch doing all the normal exercises like high knees, side shuffle, etc. Finish with some leg kicks.

5-10 minutes:

Speed of play training off the your fence or wall. To help get our legs loose spend 5 minutes passing, shooting, bending and pinging the ball off the wall. Start slowly and then pick up your power as you feel more warmed up. As the ball travels back to you off the fence, check your shoulder to practice your speed of play, then take a great set up touch, and hit it back off the wall. Repeat for 5 minutes.

10-15 minutes:

Set your group of balls up about 18-20 yards away from the goal to your left side. You will be bending the ball in with your right foot to the far post. Use your 5 cones as a curved line to the back post to show how your ball should bend in the far post. If you are left footed, then do this exercise from the opposite side.

Think about this. If you are on the side of the goal, where is the goalie going to be? On the near post, this is why in this position it's a good idea to bend it to the far post. Bend all your balls in, go for technique not power. Gather up all your balls and repeat for 5 minutes. This is not fitness; so don't rush your shot. It's technique work.

15-20 minutes:

Repeat your bending technique exercise except now pass the ball off the wall. As it comes back to you, check your shoulders to see where the goalie and defenders are, take a good set up touch, and then bend it in! Repeat for 5 minutes.

20-25 minutes:
Shooting with your laces practice! Set up all your balls in a pile about 10 yards out from the goal. Set up one ball at a time and run up and hit it with perfect technique. We are only working on technique here. Ankle locked, toe down, land on your shooting foot, generate power from getting your thigh back. There are lots of key points. After you shoot all your balls. Set them up again and repeat for 5 minutes. This is not fitness, so don't rush.

25-30 minutes:

Shooting from a dribble. Set up a start cone and a second cone, your defender cone is about 5 yards ahead of you angled to the side. Dribble at the cone, creating space on to the side you want to go to, do a move past the imaginary defender and get your shot off. Light jog back, then repeat. Repeat for 5 minutes.

Bonus Tip!

For tips on how to shoot for power and bend the ball watch my Online Soccer Academy training videos titled "How to Bend a Soccer Ball" and "How to Kick a Soccer Ball: How to Shoot a Soccer Ball with Power".

If you want to extend the training session time then add on time to any section you want extra work on.

Make sure to finish with cool down and stretching. If you are up for it add on a few sit ups and push ups!
