How To Know When To Dribble or Pass

Learn when to dribble and when to pass in this soccer tutorial by Coach DJ.

Key Points:

1 - Think, don’t panic!

2 - Be aware of your surroundings!

3 - Decide and Act!

4 - Create win win situations.

5 - Choose High Percentage.

Exercise to Practice:

Play soccer quiz up! I don’t know if that’s an actual game, but we are making it up now. Here is how it works. You will need a tv or a computer and a pro game to watch. Plus you need a pen and paper. Old school. There is no app for this! Or maybe there is, I don’t know!

How it works. Write on a piece of paper the words you and pro with lines like how I do it on the video.

Every few passes when a pro gets the ball or is about to get the ball write a P for Pass or D for Dribble on your section. Write it as fast as you can. Then if the pro passes, mark a P on their side. If the pro dribbles mark a D. Every time your answer matches their answer, you probably made the right choice. Each time it doesn’t match, think about why it didn’t for a few seconds. Maybe rewind the play and watch it again if your tv allows you to do that.

The game will be moving fast so don’t feel like you have to do this every time a pro gets the ball. Kinda say like alright next ball I’m going to play the game. Do it every few passes, not every pass.

This exercise is not a perfect science. Lots of times you may make the right choice, but the pro didn’t. This is just a good exercise to get you thinking about your decision making. So come game time you are making the correct decision more times then not.

The more situations you understand the quicker you will be able to decide in the game what your high percentage option is.

What’s Wrong:

If you are trying to pass to everyone that is yelling asking for the ball because you want to make everyone happy, you are doing it wrong.

Bonus Tip:

Who makes the choice in the game? You or your coach? You do. Yes, listen to your coach, but come game time do what your gut tells you to and if you make a mistake no big deal. Just react positive and get back on defense right away.
