How To Dribble Like Messi

Learn how to dribble like Messi in this tutorial featuring the statUP skill tracking app.

Key Points:

1 - Change pace.

2 - Take a big touch into space.

3 - Get your eyes up.

Exercise to Practice:

An exercise to practice is a statUP test for Messi dribbling. Download the statUP test on iOS or Android or sign up at statUP and search Messi in their test library.

Start with a walking pace of a dribble and then once you get to the second cone 5 yards away from the first cone take a big touch and accelerate as fast as you can past the top cone 15 yards away. Imagine you are trying to accelerate past the defender. Have a friend start the timer on your statUP app when you cross the second cone and stop the timer when you pass the last cone. You must take at least one touch every 5 yards of the 15 yard sprint with the ball for your total speed to count.

Repeat this statUP test over and over again to track your acceleration with the ball improvement. Give yourself a little rest between each statUP though.

What’s Wrong:

If you are not accelerating fast enough make sure you take a bigger first touch past the defender. If it’s too small of a touch this will slow you down.

Bonus Tip:

Slow down! Soccer is a game of changing pace. The best players don’t go 100 miles per hour all the time. They go slow, then fast. They go medium, then fast. They go fast, then slow.

Yes, work hard but work smart too.
