How to Control your Temper

Tips on how to better control your anger on the soccer field.

Controlling your temper on the field is important. Your temper can cause you to not think and it will increase your chances of making stupid mistakes and/or receiving yellow and red cards.

The good news is having a temper and being passionate on the field is a good thing. It's easier to tone down and control that passion then try to force someone to be passionate about the game.

Key Points:

1. React positive to mistakes! Mistakes are going to happen, don't get mad every time you mess up or the game won't be fun.

2. Take a deep breath! Next time you mess up or something goes wrong, take a deep breath and try to relax for a second versus acting on impulse. Your impulse may be to yell and scream at the ref but if you give yourself 1-2 seconds to take a deep breath you will probably realize that is not a good idea.

3. Mentally prepare ahead of time on what you will do when you lose your temper. Imagine yourself getting really mad because a defender fouled you and the ref didn't see it. Imagine instead of reacting with a lost temper and tackling that player from behind, you react positive, don't foul them, which keeps you from getting a yellow card and you get back on defense. Visualize that in your head.

4. You control your mind! Don't let it control you!

What Player Could Be Doing Wrong:

If you are losing your temper too much on the field then you are not following the key points above. Follow the key points and control your mind. You tell it what to do!
