How to Head a Soccer Ball

Today we are learning how to head a soccer ball with power and the basics of heading the ball.

There are many different styles, ways and reasons for heading a soccer ball. In this Online Soccer Academy soccer training video we are just going to learn the basics of heading and how to generate power. This video is geared for beginner players and their coaches but it of course can be applied to players of all abilities.

Key Points:

1. Hit ball on your Forehead
2. Keep your eyes open as long as you can. Yes, you want to keep your eyes open the whole time but if you see pros in action pics heading a ball their eyes are generally closed. They don't do it on purpose, it's a natural reaction. So keep yours open as long as you can.
3. Generate power by leaning back. Think about passing. Do you push the ball forward or do you bring your leg back and then kick it? You bring your leg back. Same with heading, you need to lean back, activate your core, then come forward.
4. Hit the ball when your head is in line with your body. What I mean is don't head it when you are leaning to far forward, or when you are to far back. Head it right when your head is in a normal upright position.

Equipment Needed: Ball and Partner

Soccer Exercise Player Can Do:

Start off from the standing position. No jumping. Lean back, partner tosses the ball with two hands, underhand service and you come through and head it straight back. Repeat 10 times. Do exercise

Once comfortable head from the jump. As you jump make sure you are leaning back then come through the ball just like you did on headers from the stand still. Head the ball at your highest point, that is where your most power is in the jump. So jump up, meet the ball at your highest point and head it back. Do 10 headers, rest. Repeat until tired. Do exercise

When jumping don't jump with our arms out like a bird. Jump with your arms coming up with you, giving you a little bit extra and then use them to help with the header motion.

What Player Could Be Doing Wrong:

If you are not getting enough power from your header you could be jumping into the ball. Don't let it hit you and then you jump to give it power. You attack it.

If power is still an issue for you, then you are not leaning back enough and your timing is off. Don't stand straight up and push your head forward, remember you have to lean back, then come forward with power.
