How To Finish Close to Goal

Learn how to score close to goal with shooting practice from Coach DJ Diveny!

Key Points:

1 - Be in a good position.

2 - Stay cool!

3 - Make contact with the ball.

4 - Believe you will score.

5 - Follow up.

Exercise to Practice:

An exercise to practice is close range finishing. You will need a few balls, three cones, a goal and a partner. If you don’t have a goal use a wall or fence.

Start at a cone 12 yards from goal. Run up to your second cone on the 6 yard line as your partner starts their cross. Score anyway you can. Your partner should be crossing all kinds of crazy to you. Bouncing balls, balls from high above, hard crosses, soft crosses, crosses behind you, etc. They can use their feet or hands if needed. They should mix it up so you can focus on making contact anyway you can that’s not considered a handball by most refs standards.

As soon as you make contact follow up to the third cone which is 3 yards from goal. This will get you in the habit of following up. After you get to the third cone, pause a second like you are expecting a rebound and then hustle back to the top cone.

Repeat and use all the balls you have, then re group the balls and repeat. Do a few sets and switch with your partner.

What’s Wrong:

If you are very upset when you miss you are putting way too much pressure on yourself.

Bonus Tip:

Celebrate! When you score in a game celebrate!

Second Bonus Tip! If you are losing when you score don’t do a celebration that takes time.
