How to Shoot a Soccer Ball - Additional Pointers

Today we are learning additional pointers for how to shoot a soccer ball with power.

This video is a part two to my Online Soccer Academy video titled "How to Kick a Soccer Ball: How to Shoot a Soccer Ball with Power". Watch that for the basic and advanced key points.

The video will be addressing a few of the commonly asked questions in regards to shooting that my other video doesn't answer.

Question 1: My technique is off?

When this happens remove the ball from the equation and practice just your technique without the ball. Take a step and hold it on your plant foot, showing your ankle locked, toe down, then swing your leg and hold it where the ball would be showing proper technique, for the third step swing through and land on your kicking foot. Continue this 5-10 times or until you feel confident in your technique.

Question 2: I can't keep my ankle locked!

Stand on your plant foot. With your dominant foot point your toe straight down and push it back to lock your ankle. You should feel your muscles on the top of your ankle feel stretched out a bit. Take a few swings holding this pose. Then repeat 5 sets.

Question 3: Ball is not getting much power and bouncing on me.

This means you are hitting the top of the ball, not through the middle of it. So your back swing is to high and you are coming down on the top of the ball forcing most of your power into the ground. You want a good back swing but not to high so when you swing and hit the ball you hit the middle of it.

Question 4: I'm hitting the ball with my laces but it still goes over.

This means you are making contact with your ankle locked toe down but as you follow through your toe comes up immediately. Keep that toe down as long as you can on your follow through until you land on it.

Equipment Needed: As many balls as you have and a goal. If you don't have a goal use a wall or fence.

Exercise Player Can Do:

Set up your balls about 5-10 yards from goal. Then one at a time strike them in the net practicing your technique. This is not fitness; it's technique work so take your time. We are not aiming for the corners or shooting from distance, this is just technique work.

Be sure and watch my other shooting for power video for regular tips and remember this video is an additional video to that one to address commonly asked questions the other video can't answer!
