Breakdown of Landon Donovan's Goal

This is a breakdown of a Counter Attack Goal scored by Landon Donovan of LA Galaxy! Great example of how Speed of Play can lead to Goal scoring opportunities. 

In the 57th second of the video you will see the LA Galaxy's Marcelo Sarvas check his shoulders before he receives a pass.

Why does he do this? He does this so he can see the field. He's looking for defenders near him and where his attackers are. 

A regular player in this situation would not check their shoulders and as the ball came to them on top of their own 18 yard box they would just clear the ball up the field. The fans would cheer and think you did great but really you did average. Certainly nothing wrong with the clearing the ball from danger when you have pressure on you and always, always clear it out when in doubt. 

But if you are smart and work on speed of play like Marcelo Sarvas in this example you will check your shoulders, notice you have space and options and make a smart outlet pass instead of just clearing the ball up the field. That's the difference between a good player and a great player. Which one are you going to be?

We have lots of videos to help you get in the habit of checking your shoulders every time you receive a pass. Do these videos a few times a week and add speed of play to your game. You will be a better player because of it and the game will feel like it has slowed down because you are smarter on the ball. 

It doesn't matter whether you are 25 making millions playing for Manchester United or you are 15 years old playing for the Mandeville Lakers in Louisiana.... You can check your shoulders!
