Soccer Speed of Play Exercise Off Two Walls

Today we are a doing a soccer speed of play exercise.

You can do this exercise outdoors but we are indoors today since most of the world is to cold to train outdoors in the winter. Our location is Pelican Athletic Club in Mandeville, Louisiana. This is the same gym I trained at growing up and in my college and pro off-seasons.

Speed of play is important. You need to be fast in your mind and know what you are going to do with the ball before you get it. If you can learn to do this, you will be more comfortable on the ball and increase your passing efficiency.

Exercise Player Can Do:

You need one ball and two gym walls. One in front of you and one to the side of you. You should be about 15 yards away from each. Pass the ball off one wall, check your shoulder, take a touch as it comes back to you and turn and pass the ball off the other wall. Then repeat going back and fourth between both walls. Do this for 2 minutes. Then rest for 30 seconds. Do 3 sets.

Key Points:

1. As the ball comes back to you check your shoulder. You are practicing looking for defenders, teammates, runs, spacing, etc.

2. Angle your body to see the field. Don't stand with your back to the field because then you can't see what's behind you. Turn your body to see the field.

3. Receive the pass off the wall with your forward foot. You can receive it on your back foot but the basic fundamentals say you should receive it on your forward foot in a turn situation.

Things to Note:

This exercise is about executing the fundamentals, working on speed of play and angling your body. Execute the fundamentals consistently and you will build a platform for yourself to be successful.

What Player Could Be Doing Wrong:

If you are running all over the place during this exercise you are doing it wrong. You are taking too big of a touch. You shouldn't be moving too much from your spot in this exercise. Take a smaller touch a step or two in front of you, and then make the pass. Think about in a game, receiving the ball, taking a touch, and then making a pass right away.
