Speed for Soccer - Ladder Drill 1
This soccer training video covers three ladder drills. Using a speed ladder regularly will help increase your speed. Speed isn't everything in soccer, but it sure helps!
Key Points:
1. Run on your toes/balls of your Feet
2. Pump your arms fast
Equipment Needed: A speed ladder, cones, or sidewalk chalk.
Soccer Exercises Player Can Do:
Using cones I set up a speed ladder with an end cone about 10 yards away from the last cone of the ladder. Before doing speed ladder drills make sure you properly warm up.
Exercise 1:
Two steps facing forward in each cone. Sprint to end cone. Light jog back. Rest a few seconds. Repeat four times.
Exercise 2:
Two steps in each cone facing left. Sprint to end cone. Light jog back. Rest a few seconds. Repeat four times.
Exercise 3:
Two steps in each cone facing right. Sprint to end cone. Light jog back. Rest a few seconds. Repeat four times.
Speed ladder training usually lasts 5-10 minutes and it is generally done in the earlier part of your training session. There are many more speed ladder exercises; these are just three of them. I will teach more in the future. For now feel free to add on more speed ladder exercises to your training session, if you know any.
Bonus Tip:
Speed ladder exercises focus on speed work, not cardio fitness. So don't sprint back after each ladder and then go again quickly. Rest on your way back so when it is time to go fast, you are explosive, not tired.
What Player Could Be Doing Wrong:
If you are hitting the cones or struggling to do the speed ladder exercises correctly you are going to fast. Start of slow, even walk if you have too, get comfortable with the exercise and then speed it up when you are ready. Better to do speed ladders correct and slow, then fast and wrong.
