Soccer - It's a Journey, not a Destination

It is important to enjoy your journey through soccer!

A lot of players in the game regardless of their age and level get caught up in the destination part of soccer, not the journey. The destination being pro soccer for example. Some youth players are overly consumed with being a pro soccer player. They put a lot of un needed pressure on themselves to make un realistic improvements in one day and they feel the need to be a pro tomorrow.

Being a pro doesn't happen overnight.

The reality is it takes a long time, a journey, to get to the pro level of soccer. Once you get there, once you reach that destination, then what?

Do you pull over at the pro soccer rest stop and say "I made it, I've reached my destination?"

No, you keep training, you keep improving and you continue the journey that is, soccer.

Here's a secret for you. Soccer is not a destination, there is no end point. It's a constant journey and you need to remember to enjoy the journey along the way!

Key Points:

1. Enjoy the journey! Have fun, play with a smile!
2. Don't put un needed pressure on yourself to be a pro tomorrow. Small improvements daily equal large improvements over time.
3. Celebrate the small victories like an award or championship today, move on to the next goal tomorrow.
4. Stay Positive and be a great teammate! That's one of the best parts of soccer, the comradery amongst your teammates.

What Player Could Be Doing Wrong:

If you worry too much about the future you will put to much pressure on yourself and your performance will suffer. Think and dream about your future of course, but do your best to live in the moment.

Jim Fannin, a sports psychologist I really like says athletes should tell themselves "I have no future, I have no past, my only goal is to make the present last".

Remember soccer is a journey, not a destination. Learn to enjoy the journey!
