How to Chest Trap to Head the Soccer Ball
There are lots of ball control exercises you can do using a partner, wall or fence. Chesting the ball and heading it back to your partner is a ball control exercise that is very challenging. It's a great way to improve your skills and ball control!
Key Points:
1. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and bend your knees slightly.
2. Tilt your chest back so it acts like a ramp and as the ball hits you chest the ball upwards
3. Pop up with your knees like you are doing a squat motion to help get power in your touch off your chest
4. Head the ball back to your teammate
Things to Note:
Make sure your partner tosses you the ball firm and straight at you with an underhand toss. This way the ball already has power in it and it's easier to chest trap it up to your head. If the ball is lobbed to you, it's hard to chest it up because the natural power and motion of the ball is not there.
Equipment Needed: Ball, partner or a wall or fence.
Exercise Player Can Do:
I will give you two exercises. One to practice with your partner and one to practice with yourself.
The first exercise is with your partner. Have your partner hold the ball in their hands standing about 3 yards away from you. They toss it to your chest, you chest trap it and head it back to them. Do this 10 times, and then switch with your partner. Repeat three sets or until you are tired.
If you don't have a partner stand by a fence or wall. Toss the ball underhand off the wall so it comes back to your chest. Chest trap it and head the ball back to yourself off the wall. This will be a bit harder then using a partner.
What Player Could Be Doing Wrong:
If you can't chest the ball up to your head it could be two things. First the ball is not being tossed at you hard enough and straight enough. If the toss from your partner is lobbed, it's hard to get the power you need from your chest. Make sure it's a straight, firm toss, underhand service.
Second. You are not tilting your chest back and popping up when you receive the ball. If you are facing your chest straight up and down, then the ball will just hit you and fall. Make sure to tilt your chest back, so the ball hits it and your chest acts like a ramp, causing the ball to go up to your head.
